Kingston & Polytechnic Harriers throwing star Chris Dack failed to defend his South of England Championships senior men’s shot title on Saturday.

The 32-year-old was way off his best as his effort of 15.47metres was only enough for fifth place at Lee Valley in a competition he won 12 months ago.

Training partner Pippa Wingate was unable to repeat her senior women’s hammer silver success of last year as she threw 55.28m to claim bronze, before finishing fourth and eighth in the shot (12.10m) and discus (40.39) respectively.

Kingston did have something to cheer as 19-year-old Nicole Kendall streaked home to claim silver in the U20 women’s 200m final in a new personal best time of 25.18 seconds.

Walton Athletics Club trio Hugo Fleming, Fiona De Mauny and Jo Locker did little better at Lee Valley.

Fleming was left frustrated as he clocked 1:55.4 in the senior men’s 800m when a time of close to his personal best of 1:51-.91 might have given him a silver medal.

Locker finished fourth in the senior women’s 1,500m (4:40.87) and De Mauny was fourth in the 800m (2:13.60).

There was better news at the Surrey Schools’ Athletics Championships on Saturday as Kingston & Polytechnic Harrier Mollie O’Sullivan struck gold on the track at Kingsmeadow stadium.

The 15-year-old Holy Cross student clocked four minutes 39.73 seconds to win the intermediate girls’ 1,500m final at Kingsmeadow and a shot at bettering last year’s fourth place finish in the same event at the English Schools Championships.

Tiffin School’s Euan Traynor clocked 63.75 secs to win intermediate boys 400m hurdles silver, while Richard Challoner School’s Aedan O’Brien won senior boys 1,500m silver in 4:12.79.

The trio will now represent Surrey in the South East of England Inter Counties match in Kent this Saturday.
