Hercules Wimbledon’s Rechmial Miller ran a superb race to win 100m bronze at the IAAF World Youth Championships – much to his own surprise.

Miller, only just 17, won the first of only three British medals at the championships, held in Cali, Colombia, and finished in 10.59 seconds to take third.

It was a close-run affair, with Miller finishing 0.01 of a second ahead of compatriot Oliver Bromby (10.60secs) and Canadian Chuba Nwachukwu (10.60secs).

The gold went to Japan’s Abdul Hakim Sani Brown (10.28secs) and Derick Silva won silver in 10.49secs.

Miller, who twice improved his personal best time in the heats, said: “I have been running well and was very confident I could perform. The times I ran in the heats set me up perfectly for the day.”

“I came into the competition ranked ninth overall so didn’t expect to come away with a medal. It’s a great surprise and I’m delighted.”

He added: “I just had to make sure I gave everything. I’ve still got a bit to work on but I’m happy with that.”

Miller also had cause for celebration as his younger brother Chad, competing for Surrey in an U17 inter-county match at High Wycombe, won his 100m race in 11.36secs.

It was the younger sibling’s fastest run this summer, despite running into a stiff headwind.

Elsewhere, there were some successful results over the longer distances for the Wimbledon club.

Richard McDowell, fresh from his victory in the Surrey Badger half-marathon a fortnight ago, won the Kingston parkrun – heading home a 1,245 strong field – while Gina Galbraith won the women’s race at Bognor Regis with a personal best time of 20:44.

On Wimbledon Common, Claire Grima, pictured right, came home in second while Neil Fraser was third in the men’s race with over-45 veteran Tom Cheetham clocking a personal best in finishing 20th.

The club’s athletes will be competing this weekend across the country, with meetings taking place in Carshalton, Birmingham and Elmbridge, while U13 sprinter Jaleel Roper will compete for Surrey in an inter-county meeting at Kingsmeadow stadium on Sunday.
