Croydon Harrier Martyn Rooney goes into Thursday’s Stockholm BAUHAUS Athletics IAAF Diamond League meeting hoping to reach his peak just in time for the forthcoming IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

With the Champs just under four weeks away, the 28-year-old continued his preparations with a seventh place 45.73secs run at London Anniversary Games IAAF Diamond League men’s 400m event last Saturday.

He finished behind newly crowned British champion from Newham & Essex Beagles Rabah Yousif, who was sixth in 45.73.

South Africa’s 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games silver medallist Wayde van Niekerk cruised to victory during the home straight of London Olympic stadium track in 44.63secs.

American David Verburg was second in 45.01secs and London 2012 Olympic 4x400m relay gold medallist from the Bahamas, Chris Brown, third in 45.22secs.

“When I crossed the line, I thought the guys had run 43 something and I'd be around 44 high, but it just wasn't the day,” said Rooney.

“I just tried to be strong in the last 200m. I ran 45.5 last week in Loughborough so I thought if I could run a similar race here I could run 44 high but it wasn't meant to be today.

"I probably ran the same way as I did in Loughborough.

“There's two guys in that race who have run 43 seconds this year and they ran 44 high so it was interesting.

“I know I'm in decent shape and I know when I come to championships, I always run SBs or PBs, when it matters I do the job.”

At the same meeting fellow Croydon Harrier James Dasaolu says he is happy with his form going into the IAAF World Championships.

The 27-year-old European Champion finished back of the pack in the men’s 100m final in 10.19secs, while Usain Bolt wowed the crowd once again with his outstanding 9.87secs effort on a rained-drenched track.

USA’s Michael Rodgers followed in 9.90 and Bolt’s fellow compatriot Kemar Bailey-Cole third in 9.92.

“It was a good race,” said Dasaolu. “Everyone was sub-10 so I knew it was going to be hard. It's good to race these guys so you know where you're at.

“But I’m happy, fit and healthy and got two rounds in the bag. I’m just now going to do some training and just work on peaking for Beijing.”
