AFC Wimbledon winger Robin Shroot says it will be a surreal experience if he gets the chance to line up alongside new signing Marcus Gayle.

The 18-year-old, a Dons fan all his life, remembers seeing Gayle when he was an eight-year-old junior at Wimbledon FC.

Ten years later, the Northern Ireland U20 international may be on the verge of lining up on the same side as his idol, who became Terry Brown's first signing last Friday.

He said: "I remember watching Marcus when I was at Wimbledon FC and he was just walking around the club.

"I was eight then and I'm 18 now but I am still a bit in awe of him.

"It will be unbelievable for me if I get the chance to actually play in the same team as him when I think about me watching him when I was younger."

Shroot's first-team chances were limited under Dave Anderson, despite impressive displays for the reserves.

But he is hopeful of getting the chance to be named on the same teamsheet as Gayle after meeting new boss Brown for the first time last week.

"As far as I know, I am staying at the club - they have still got the option on my contract," said Shroot.

"I met him for the first time last week and he told me that he wants us all to fight for our places. I want to stay at the club, have a good season and kick on.

"When I met Terry, he stated his plans and asked me about what I thought I could bring to the side.

"He said most of us would be given the opportunity to prove ourselves.

"So I have got to show him I'm hungry, get into the side and work hard."

Whatever happens next season, Shroot is determined to make up for lost time after a stop-start campaign last term.

"It was difficult for me last season," added Shroot.

"I felt I played well in games, but then I wouldn't even be on the bench the week after.

"The new manager has told me that he wants to play attacking football and that suits me so hopefully I can play more games."
