Newly appointed Sutton United assistant boss Stuart Massey has set his sights on a Conference South promotion challenge.

The former Whyteleafe and Chipstead manager replaces Paul Harford, who left Gander Green Lane earlier this month, after agreeing terms with the club to join boss Ian Hazel as one half of the United's new-look management team.

Massey, who made 160 appearances for United as a player in the early 90s, says his new side are more than capable of mounting a serious promotion challenge next season.

He said: "Ian and I have spoken about the expectations for next season and it all depends on the players we can bring to the club, but securing a play-off spot is our aim and there is no reason why we can't."

Hazel's new right-hand man, who also runs a kitchen-fitting firm, said his understanding with the United boss could lead the side to glory next term.

"Our paths have crossed a number of times over the years when we played against each other, and we spoke to each other quite regularly," Massey said.

"We spoke about doing this a few years ago and it is nice that we finally have the opportunity to work together.

"The club has a huge respect locally and is held in high esteem, so it is a pleasure to be back involved with the club and I hope to continue their fine tradition."

The former Crystal Palace and Oxford United midfielder insists he has the right credentials for his new role.

"I have played football at every level and that experience will stand me in good stead," he said.

"I have enthusiasm for the job and I am very passionate about my football.

"Hopefully, that can rub off on some of the younger lads."
