Aston Villa could reignite their interest in Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle this summer, according to reports.

Villa were strongly linked with a move for the 25-year-old last year but eventually opted against launching an offer.

New boss Roberto Di Matteo is hoping to bolster his squad ahead of the new season and a goalscorer is at the top of his transfer wishlist.

The Birmingham Mail say Villa could rekindle interest in Gayle, who found first-team football hard to come by at Palace last season.

The ex-Peterborough United star only featured in 16 league games and scored just three goals in 2016.

Gayle flourished in his only season in the Championship with the Posh, bagging 13 goals in 29 appearances.
