Crystal Palace have signed Ajax defender Jairo Riedewald for an undisclosed fee.

Riedewald, 20, worked under Eagles boss Frank de Boer at the Dutch side, and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal.

The defender featured 23 times for Ajax last term, and played in the Europa League final against Manchester United.

De Boer gave Riedewald his debut in senior football in 2013 and is pleased to link up with his countryman again.

He said: “Jairo Riedewald is a player I know well through my time at Ajax and I'm glad that he's now coming to join us at Crystal Palace.

“He will be an excellent addition to our squad, Jairo is a young player but already has a lot of experience. I know he is looking forward to playing in the Premier League.”

Riedewald will compete with Damien Delaney, Scott Dann and James Tomkins for a starting berth at Selhurst Park.

He is regarded as one of Europe's top young centre-halves, and has interested Everton and Tottenham in the past.

Speaking about his move to the Eagles, Riedewald said: “I am very pleased to be joining Crystal Palace and after speaking with the gaffer a couple of weeks ago I was delighted to have the opportunity to come over and play in the Premier League.

“The Premier League is a great competition to be involved in and it is a great opportunity to be working under Frank de Boer once again.

“I look forward to meeting my new team-mates and then getting the chance to be out on the training ground and getting ready for the new season.”

Riedewald is Palace’s second summer signing, following the loan capture of Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
