Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend says the new system under Frank de Boer is not the reason for the team's poor form.

The Eagles lost their third consecutive league game after a 2-0 defeat at home to Swansea City, with goals coming from Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew.

De Boer's men have both failed to score and win in each of their last three games, and now search for their first win at the fourth attempt with a trip to Burnley on September 10.

When asked whether the team is struggling to adapt to the Dutchman's approach, Townsend said: "No, of course not. We played it in pre-season, we did well against Liverpool and West Brom in Hong Kong, and we played well last Saturday against Liverpool.”

The England international doesn't believe it is coincidental that a change in managers is the reason either.

"We started poorly last season as well," he added.

"There are no excuses, we know we're better than what we're doing so it's down to us, the 11 players selected and the substitutes, to turn it around."

Townsend was one of Palace's two strikers in the game and admitted that playing in the role next to Christian Benteke is unfamiliar to him.

The 26-year-old said: "I'm not used to playing off Christian, that’s a fact. But at the end of the day we've created chances.

"Yeah, you can say that last season we were effective playing a different way. But I've had five or six shots with no goals, Christian's had a couple and no goals, and McArthur's had a couple and no goals.

"You can talk about formations all day long, but we've created the chances and we just need to start putting them away. Then it's a completely different team."

After losing now both Wilfried Zaha and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to injury, Palace are short of attacking options as Connor Wickham and Bakary Sako remain unavailable.

"Of course they're big players for us, but I think we've still got enough quality on the pitch to be doing better than what we're doing," Townsend said.

"We need to have a look at ourselves, do some more work on the training field and come back a lot better after the break.”
