Sutton United take on Boreham Wood this Sunday aiming to add a Wembley appearance to their impressive list of recent achievements.

Having won the 2015/16 Vanarama National South championship and reached the FA Cup fifth round last year, the U's once again broke new ground by claiming a third place finish this season, with manager Paul Doswell labelling it a new 'golden age' for the club.

Now United stand one win away from making their first visit to the national stadium since 1981.

Tranmere Rovers, who beat Ebbsfleet United 4-2 after extra time on Saturday, await the winners of Sunday's clash with a place in the Football League the ultimate prize.

Boreham Wood come to Gander Green Lane after a bruising 2-1 win over AFC Fylde in Thursday's eliminator while Sutton had the week to prepare for the play-off semi-final having earned a bye with a 2-1 victory over Aldershot last Saturday.

Watching from the stands was defender Terell Thomas who, along with midfielder Craig Eastmond, failed a fitness test before kick-off, meaning Doswell had to rejig his team.

It's a testament to the togetherness, depth and quality of the squad Doswell has assembled that his team appeared to cope seemlessly with the double setback to beat the Shots and impress onlookers.

“I thought it was a very good performance from the boys,” said Thomas, a product of the Charlton Athletic youth system. “We were in control in the first 15 minutes and had the better chances in the first half.

"Aldershot like to be in possession, they like to shift the ball and they’ve got good movement.

"So we just stuck to the game plan which meant we had to keep our shape and we knew we’d get chances because we know we’re decent on the ball too.”

Thomas knows the National League well after two loan spells at Woking during his time with Charlton.

The 22-year-old from Rainham in Essex has fitted right in to the Sutton set-up, establishing himself as an integral part of United's backline since making the move from Wigan Athletic in December.

A month later, Thomas had his loan extended until the end of the season and has gone on to earn well-deserved plaudits for his performances.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed it," he said. "It’s been a different experience for me, playing games and knowing there’s a chance of winning the league.

"The lads have been great. When I first came in they welcomed me and were very nice to me. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about them.

"I am in a car pool with JC (Jamie Collins), Harry Beautyman and Dean Beckwith, so we all come in together.

"I have played in the National League before and I know the level. But coming to Sutton I knew we had to win games because we were going for the title and now we’re going for the play-offs.

"It wasn’t just about playing well, it was learning how to win games and it’s all good for my development. I think my performances have been to a decent standard."

Having been a rock in Sutton’s defence for their promotion push, Thomas clearly enjoys challenging for honours and is looking forward to taking the next step on Sunday.

"Up until recently we had a chance of winning the league. We were top at one point on goal difference," he said.

"But that’s football sometimes, you have to grind out performances and unfortunately we slipped off for three or four games and that’s what really killed it for us.

"But the boys have done well to bounce back and get third. Now we’re just one game from Wembley.

“I’m confident about our chances. The way I feel about our team and the trust I have in the players, I believe we can get the job done.”
