Captain-for-the-day Alan Bray has described leading Sutton United into the FA Cup first round proper as the highlight of his career.
The 23-year-old was handed the armband in place of injured skipper Jason Goodliffe for Saturday’s 3-1 fourth qualifying round win at Hampton & Richmond Borough.
Boss Paul Doswell labelled Bray’s performance immense as he kept former United striker Craig Dundas quiet for large parts of the game - his 60th minute equaliser apart.
But the young defender, usually a full-back, was a relieved man histeam ensured the Hampton forward’s effort didn’t rob his side of the opportunity of facing Hereford United in the next round.
‘’When Paul told me I was captain I thought it was amazing and a real honour,” he said.
“To be captain, to play centre back, play well and to get through to the first round of the cup, I think has to be the best moment of my career so far.
“Craig was a tough man to mark, and he played well, but I thought I was on top of my game and did pretty well against him. It was a real team effort, though - from Scrivs in goal to Sam up front we all did our jobs, and we deserved the win.
“When he scored I thought they’d be on top of us and we might be a bit shaky, but when Gargan scored so quickly I really felt we were on to win.”
