Cook: I'm happy to wait

Lee Cook has been forced to put his Southern Area Lightweight title defence on hold - but you will not hear the Morden fighter complaining.

Cook was due to face Ben Murphy in London on November 20 on a bill that was cancelled this week and rescheduled for December 11.

But the enforced break has given Cook time to catch up on his other responsibilities - namely eight-week old son George.

Cook said: “I have had to take a couple of weeks off but that has given me more time to spend with George.

“He is a really good kid - he seems to be smiling all the time and he hardly makes any noise.

“He has a bit of a moan when he wants feeding but that is it - he is good as gold.”

The 28-year-old has taken a training time-out in order to replicate the routine that has brought him success in the past.

And he admits he is more than happy to put his trust in his trainers.

Cook added: “In boxing there is definitely such a thing as over-training and you do not want to peak too soon.

“So when I knew the fight had been delayed we made the decision to stop training there and then and come back to it later this month.

“It really does not bother me - I just need to watch my weight and make sure everything is in order when I get back into it.”

Cook, who was inspired to pull on the gloves thanks to the boxing pedigree of both his father and brothers, admits he has concerns that George will one day want to step through the ropes.

He added: “If George want to box when he grows up I will not stand in his way but I would much prefer him do something like football.

“That is a lot safer, and he could probably make more money! ”
