London Irish scrum-half Paul Hodgson has backed Harlequins winger Ugo Monye to bounce back from his Argentina nightmare to star for his country against New Zealand on Saturday.
The 26-year-old flyer had a torrid time at full-back against the Puma’s as team boss Martin Johnson’s men struggled to imposed themselves in a 16-9 win at Twickenham.
Monye, a star for the British & Irish Lions over the summer, enjoyed a more productive second-half when switched to his more accustomed role on the wing.
But Hodgson, who made his first start for his country in place of Danny Care and will make his second against New Zealand, reckons it is not just down to individuals to raise their game.
“We are all aware our performance was nowhere near where it should be,” he said.
“It is up to the whole team to step up and not just certain individuals. Every single guy needs to improve on last week.
“Ugo had a difficult time in the first half, but he came through it and made some good breaks in the second half which is what he is all about.
“He is a fantastic player and I’ve got no worries about him going into this game.”
Former Sutton & Epsom youngster Hodgson made his debut against Ireland in last year’s Six Nations and has been battling with Quins’ Care for the number nine jersey ever since.
And he is hoping a confident display against the All Blacks can cement his place as England’s first choice scrum-half.
“You have to try and make sure you are a threat all over the pitch and that is what I’ll be trying to do,” he added.
“I’ll obviously be doing what is best for the team and will giving 120 per cent.
“Competition for places is important and I’m used to it at club level. Danny is an exceptional player and it is great we have each other to keep us on our toes.
“An England shirt is not given to you by right, it has got to be earned. New Zealand are a massive test, but I’m looking forward to it.”
