Terry Brown reckons the rest of his AFC Wimbledon squad would be well-advised to take a leaf out of midfielder Steven Gregory’s book after the 22-year-old produced a match-winning performance last weekend.

Gregory struck a stunning opener as the Dons eased to a 2-0 win over Gateshead at Kingsmeadow, stretching their Blue Square Premier winning streak to four games.

And after seeing his side move into sixth place in the table, Brown is confident there is plenty more to come from the Aylesbury-based former Hayes & Yeading man.

He said: “To me the goal was just a bonus as his performances are far more important.

“As far as I am concerned Steven is the model professional.

“He does everything right - he looks after himself and he is totally committed.

“He lives quite a distance away but he has not missed a single training session and he is a great example to others.

“On the pitch he has a calming assurance about what he does and that is perfect for a holding midfield player.

“He has a range of passing far better than most and he has become a key part of our side.”

Ricky Wellard added a second goal with a curling free-kick, but boss Brown was more keen to talk about a fourth successive clean sheet.

He added: “I think the clean sheets are the key factor.

“We were conceding two goals a game for a lot of the season and you are not going to win anything like that.

“But Stuart Cash has done a lot of work in training and that seems to have paid off.

“We are very close to where we wanted to be at this stage of the campaign - I had set a target of 40 points from our first 23 games and we are one point off that.

“We are still very much a team in the making and I always anticipated getting stronger through the season.

“I think we will be a better side at the end of this season, and even better next year, and that is great for the future of this club.”
