Croydon Athletic 3 Worthing 1

Croydon Athletic put in a stirring performance at the KT Stadium with some fine goals in this match against a strong Worthing side, writes Karen Muir.

In the 12th minute Joe Howe came close after a run from defence, and Scott Forrester had a chance with a shot just wide of the post.

With loan signing Tom Davis making his debut and looking impressive in midfield, and some good strikes from Ben Johnson and Evan Archibald for Worthing at the other end of the field, the crowd were kept entertained but no-one could make the breakthrough by half time.

The Rams had two clear cut chances when Forrester was through on goal but Worthing keeper Alan Mansfield did enough to deny the striker.

The second half saw the Rams take the lead with a spectacular goal from Forrester in the 50th minute with a screamer of a volley from 18 yards that nearly took the top of the net off!

Just two minutes later it was Davis who made it 2-0, and in the 57th minute things got worse for Worthing when Paul Kennett got his second yellow card and was subsequently sent off the field.

However Worthing’s 10 men got on the teamsheet in the 66th minute when a corner in found Ben Williamson in the box at close range to get one back for the away side, and mount a mini-revival for Worthing.

The Rams sealed the match in the 70th minute though when a pass from Forrester found Danny Waldren and the midfielder belted it from 20 yards to put the Rams 3-1 up.

Further chances followed from Ben Godfrey and Tom Bolarinwa, both hitting the ball over the bar, but Croydon were happy to come away with the points with a solid performance that sees them keep the pressure up at the top end of the table.

Croydon Athletic: Ross Flitney, Joe Howe, Chris Bourne, Neil Smith (34 mins Tom Bolarinwa), Richard Blackwell (78 mins Jeremy Williams), Ben Lewis, Danny Waldren, Chris Piper, Scott Forrester, Gary Noel (68 mins Ben Godfrey), Tom Davis Subs not used: Rory Hill, Bentley Graham
