Matt Lawrence says new Crystal Palace owners CPFC2010 must move quickly if they hope to keep their out-of-contract players.

The defender is one of seven first teamers whose deals run out this month who have yet to be offered new contracts.

He has heard nothing from the Eagles since the final day drama at Sheffield Wednesday though and admitted he has begun searching for a new club.

"Since Paul Hart wished us all good luck at 3pm on May 2 I have not heard from anyone," said the 35-year-old.

"I have never had a situation like that and it is strange and a shame for the football club.

"With that lack of contact there are a lot of out of contract players who have left or are in the process of leaving.

"I understand what's gone on and we need to wait for the takeover to go ahead completely and for a manager to be appointed but it is just a shame to see.

"I believe Johnny Ertl has left and I imagine Darren Ambrose will leave still.

"When somebody has had a medical and agreed terms it is sometimes difficult to stay when you know what is on the other side.

"People are normally told the day after the season ends if they will be offered a new contract or not but we weren't and we are now five weeks from then.

"I have been willing to sit and wait but there comes a time when you have to be proactive yourself.

"I would like to stay but I have got a career to maintain so in the last week I have started contacting people.

"Pre-season starts in three weeks time and I would like to be at a football club by then so I am trying to make alternative arrangements, the same as all the other players have or are doing."

Lawrence has also backed Dougie Freedman to take over management duties at SE25 after spending the end of last season as Paul Hart's assistant.

"I am sure he would be ready for it," he said.

"Having worked with him he is ready and knows his mind and what he wants out of the game.

"Chris Coleman was given his first start at a Premiership club and proved he was ready and that worked for him so why not Dougie?"
