Sutton United midfielder Tony Taggart has insisted boss Paul Doswell's squad rotation policy is an added incentive for him.

Taggart bagged his first goal for the club on Tuesday night as United eased to a 2-0 win over Eastleigh at Gander Green Lane to back up Saturday's terrific 3-0 triumph at Truro City.

The former Eastleigh man, signed in the summer from the Spitfires, has started all but two of Sutton's Blue Square South outings this term.

He says the games he has sat out has pushed him to up his game and ensure boss Doswell has no excuse to leave him on the sidelines.

"The manager has said he wants to mix it up and sometimes people will be rested," he said.

"A few of my performances have not been my best, but knowing there are players to come on makes you pick up your game.

"You've got to be willing to put in a performance to keep the shirt."

Taggart set-up Harry Beautyman's stunning volley in Cornwall on Saturday and he took that form in to Tuesday as his goal - added to a seventh minute own goal - kept United fourth in the table.

"You always love to get a goal against you old team but it was also important for the team to give us breathing space," he added.

"It would have been disappointing to follow up Saturday with a defeat and in many ways this was a better win given the travelling we did at the weekend."

Sutton have collected 20 points from their opening 10 games this term to leave them entrenched in the table's top six.

And Taggart believes Doswell's men can take the run all the way to the Blue Square Premier - providing they stick to the manager's orders.

"I hope it carries on and we push form promotion," he said.

"With the squad we have got, I don't see why we can't get to the Premier if we carry on doing the right things and what the manager tells us."
