Sutton United striker Leroy Griffiths has shouldered the blame for his side's FA Cup exit to Notts County on Sunday.

The 34-year-old saw his first-half penalty saved by visiting keeper Stuart Nelson with the League One Magpies leading 1-0 through Jeff Hughes' 33rd minute opener.

United had the best of the chances throughout the game, but couldn't make them count as Hughes eventually bundled in a second goal in the 90th minute second - moments after Sutton defender Karl Murray had seen red for two yellow cards.

The result flattered boss Martin Allen's County and Griffiths admitted it could have been a very different story had he found the net from the spot.

"I take full blame on this occasion," he said.

"If I score the penalty we can go back to their ground and have a go and attack, but you need to be a man and stand up and I stand up and take responsibility.

"I could have stuck my penalty away. I had what I had in mind but other people I spoke to told me not to do what I wanted to do.

"It didn't pay off but we played well and were the better team I think.

"The manager and other people said don't do that, just smash it.

"I wanted to chip it in the top left corner but everyone told me to change it and it didn't pay off this time.

"If I had chipped it it would have been in the goal but that's football isn't it."
