Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders is confident he will strike a deal to remain at Griffin Park beyond the end of the current campaign.

The 28-year-old, who scored in Saturday's 5-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers, has a contract offer on the table but is yet to put pen to paper.

Saunders has already been sounded out over a one-year deal with a clause to extend that by another year triggered by appearances.

The former Dagenham & Redbridge star is after more security, but he has assured fans he is not about to walk away from the club any time soon.

"I'm not making any silly wage demands or anything like that I just want to have the security of a two year deal, otherwise I'm going to be in the same position this time next year," he said.

"I've still got four months to go on my current contract so there is still plenty of time to sort things out.

"I would like to think that will happen sooner rather than later.

"I've had a good 12 months since this time last year and have played nearly 50 games.

"I am ambitious and as long as the club is matching my ambitions - which it is - then that is only a good thing.

"I'm at the stage of my career where everything has got to be right and I hope everything can be sorted because I'm enjoying my football here."

Saunders arrived at the club as a right winger, but was deployed in the hole behind the front two in Saturday's romp that him take his season's goal tally to seven.

And the former Carshalton Athletic said he would be more than happy to repeat the trick at Preston North End this weekend.

"I've played on the right, the left and now through the middle. Of the three positions I would say playing on the right is my least favourite now," he added.

"We've tried a few different formations and we are starting to be able deploy different ones at different times in games, which is good.

"It keeps things fresh and keeps it interesting. I'd be happy to play in the middle again if asked."
