Rising Twickenham tennis star Oliver Golding hopes hard graft will help him conquer his nerves on his Wimbledon Championships debut next week.

The 18-year-old, who last year won the US Open Junior Championship, will be playing in the main draw for the first time after being handed a wildcard entry to main gentlerman’s singles draw.

The world number 485 takes on Russian 29-year-old Igor Andreev Russian, who is ranked 393 places above Golding, in the first round.

He completed his preparations at the Aegon International in Eastbourne on Saturday, losing to British number four Josh Goodall 6-2 7-6 in the second qualifying round, having beaten Germany’s Daniel Brands – ranked 380 places above him – recovering from a bad start to win 0-6 6-4 7-5.

“I’m really excited. It’s been a long journey but it’s still just a beginning,” said Golding, left.

“Obviously, it will be the first time I am going to play and, hopefully, I will play a lot of times and have chances maybe one day to win it.

“Playing in the first round will be a big experience for me – I’ll do my best and see what happens.

“I feel a little bit nervous but I got there by working hard and hopefully that will carry me through.”

Golding, who will team up with Liam Brody to face 12th seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas in the main draw of the gentlemen's doubles, won ATP Futures titles in Bournemouth and Newcastle this week.

Davis Cup stars Ross Hutchins and Colin Fleming are 12th seeds in the gentlemen's doubls and face Mikhail Kukushkin and Lukas Rosol in the first round.

Wimbledon's Laura Robson takes on 24th seed Francesca Schiavone, who once lost to Surbiton's Mel South at SW19, in the first round of the ladies draw, while South partners Tara Moore in the ladies doubles where they will play Mirjana Lucic and Valeria Savinykh.
