Wandsworth super cox Phelan Hill guided the Men's Eight crew to a thrilling bronze medal.

The eight man team flirted with gold after leading the powerful German crew just before the one kilometre mark.

But after halfway the Germans held a narrow lead of 0.4 seconds which is when Hill really laid in to his crew.

The lashing had the desired effect as the GB boys pushed even harder and reduced the German's lead to 0.2 second with just 500m remaining. Hill, who is a member of London Rowing Club based on Putney Embankment, could be seen bellowing at his boys as Team GB pushed their rivals all the way to the line.

Sadly the Germans were too strong and despite a late rally from the Canadian boat, the Brits held on to win the second rowing medal of the day after Helen Glover and Heather Stanning's gold just minutes before in the Women's double sculls.

Meanwhile Matt Wells, also a London Rowing Club member, and the Men's Quadruple Sculls came third in their semi-final and have qualified for Friday's final.

Elsewhere judoka Winston Gordon won his first match in the Men's 90kg competition but was eliminated in the last 16 by Russian Kirill Denisov and sadly exits the Games at his third attempt.

Finally, Emma Pooley has just started her time trial and, just five minutes after road race silver medallist Lizzie Armitsead began her trial.
