Wimbledon's Laura Robson served up a shock victory in the second round of the US Open by beating the three-times champion Kim Clijsters.

In the biggest win of her career so far, the 18-year-old rocked the Belgian 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) to set up a third round tie against the Chinese number nine seed Li Na.

Robson, ranked 89 in the world, came close to upsetting Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon earlier this year, and by beating Clijsters - a four times grand slam winner and ranked 25 in the world - she is taking a major step forward.

Robson said: "I've had so many tough matches against top players that I knew the level was there, I just had to keep it for the whole match.

"Kim has been such a great player for so many years and a role model for all the younger girls coming up."

Robson takes on Na - who won the French Open last year - on Friday or Saturday.
