Dons board ask Bassey to apply for manager's role
5:20pm Monday 24th September 2012 in Sport By Tim Ashton
AFC Wimbledon's caretaker manager Simon Bassey is in the running to take the hot seat full time.
Bassey, who is celebrating his testimonial after joining the Dons as a player 10 years ago, was asked by the club's board to apply for the manager's position after Terry Brown was sacked last week.
Under Bassey's leadership, the Dons claimed a League Two 1-0 win at Wycombe Wanderers - a result which ironically spelled the end for the Wycombe boss Gary Waddock who was sacked after the final whistle.
Bassey said: "I've done pretty much every job there is to do at Wimbledon and I would have loved to carry on working under Terry if the situation was different.
"The club has asked me to apply for the position and I will do so because this is a fantastic club.
"It was a great honour to lead the team on Saturday and to do it again this weekend at home will give me even more pride."
He added: "I love this club, but who knows how long I will be here should a new manager come in?
"Hopefully my time here will run for a lot longer yet."
