Herne Hill Harriers U13 girls made club history last weekend by winning the club's first ever title at the South of England Road Relay championships at Aldershot.

Taking on the top distance clubs in the south of England, Eloise O'Shaunessey led the team off and ran an excellent first leg in eight minutes, 29 seconds to keep the team close to the leaders and handed over to Saskia Millard in fifth place.

Within half a mile, Millard (8:01) had swept to the front and had started to pull clear to set up a lead of 100m at the second change-over to Katy Ann McDonald, who, within just two months running has shot to number two in the national U13 girls 1,500m rankings, and she strode away to finish in 8.22 to increase the team's lead to more than 250m at the finish

The team's finishing time of 24.52 was 46 seconds ahead of the second team and the third fastest ever winning time in this prestigious race.

Millard was also in record breaking form at the Biggleswade Athletics Club Open meeting recently, recording a personal best of 4:48.50 in the 1,500m to close her track season and lift her to number two in the country. The time is a new Harriers and Surrey County record.

The club is also celebrating winning the England Athletics Volunteer Awards - London Region, in recognition for their work in the local community in delivering athletics to all ages and standards from nine-year-olds upwards.

Club secretary Steve Bosley said: "It's a superb recognition to all the hard work our volunteers put in arranging events, coaching in all weathers and developing athletics for everyone. Since the Olympics we have been putting on extra sessions which have been very popular and the club is going from strength to strength."

Elsewhere, the Harriers' six-mile cross country race on Streatham common on Saturday attracted more than 100 runners - Joe Morwood won the men's race and Nicky Sturzaker took the women's race.
