AFC Wimbledon caretaker boss Simon Bassey could not hide his disappointment after a second consecutive League Two defeat.

The Dons went down 3-2 at Oxford on Tuesday night, on the back of Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Accrington Stanley, and despite regretting a series of missed chanced, Bassey insists his team will not be feeling sorry for themselves.

And it is important they don't start feeling sorry for themsleves as the long trip to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday provides plenty of time to mull over what went wrong.

Bassey, who took over as caretaker manager following Terry Brown's sacking last month, said: "I’m disappointed because we have gone away from home [to Oxford], given a decent performance at times, scored two goals and come away with absolutely nothing.

"I was pleased with the effort the players gave, they gave everything, but when you go away from home and score twice, hit the crossbar, hit the post, you have a one-on-one and you have two clear chances in the six yard box and you still lose the game, to say I am disappointed is an understatement."

He added: "We were not ruthless enough in either penalty area and that is what ultimately cost us. If we had that killer instinct, then we would have come away with the points that we deserved."

Byron Harrison and Jim Fenlon, with his first of the season, got the goals which took the Dons close to winning at Oxford.

On this weekend's trip to Devon, Bassey, who is likely to still be in charge after a delay in the appointment of a new manager, said: "Plymouth will be a tough game. We’ll travel across on Friday, we’ll be organised and hopefully recharged for the game.

"We have got to give a performance as we have done for large parts of the previous two games. The only difference is we need to take some points from it.

"I look at the Accrington and Oxford games and if we’d got four points I would have said that was the least we deserved, instead we took none."

He added: "It is not time to feel sorry for ourselves. We have to learn lessons from the games and be more ruthless in the penalty areas and start picking up points.

"Our performances have deserved more, but we cannot keep saying that. It is a league where you have to learn quickly and we will start learning again on Saturday."
