Croydon boxing star Charlie Edwards is all set for a shot at the Tammer Tournament gold medal this weekend.

The 19-year-old, who won silver at the prestigious Finnish event in 2010, prepared with a comfortable win over Aidan Metcalfe out of Crumlin, Northern Ireland, in an England against Ireland event last week.

The manner of his victory over the Irish man will stand him in good stead as he prepares for this important stage in his career.

Charlie, who trains in Sheffield at the England Institute of Sport with the Great Britain team, as well as at Epsom & Ewell boxing club, is targeting a European and World Championship medal next year.

He said: "The England v Ireland fight went very well considering it was the first time I'd fought since moving up to fly-weight.

"I started fast. I was using two-phased attacks and he couldn't really cope with it.

"I went at him in the first round and made him look silly. It looked like I was out of his league. In the second and third rounds I just went away from him and in the end I won on an unanimous points decision."

The Tammer tournament has had famous winners, including Oscar De La Hoya and Mike Tyson, and could propel Edwards on to the next stage of his boxing career.

He said: "The Tammer tournament, and the European and World Championships are the events where I need to prepare myself to gain more experience, and make sure I'm active enough so I can put in good performances. I need fights to make sure I don't go ring rusty."
