Sutton United manager Paul Doswell says his strikers are beginning to find their scoring boots after a lacklustre start to the season.
Craig Watkins bagged his second goal in two Blue Square South games with the last-minute winner at Eastbourne Borough on Saturday.
However, until recently United had struggled to find the net having only scored 14 goals in 12 games and only hitting two goals in the same game three times.
But Doswell said he never lost faith in his strikers and maybe now they were getting a little bit of the luck they deserved in front of goal.
He said: “Craig’s overall game this season has been good.
“I have been saying all along that if Craig had scored in three or four of the draws where we’ve had the chances, we’d be in play-offs already. It has been very frustrating.
“While the strikers here have ability, they have not been finding the back of the net. He’s beginning to build up a scoring run, so hopefully he can continue that. If he does, we’ll win football matches.”
Doswell added: “Kyle Vassell was excellent on Saturday as well. So hopefully the strikers are finding form. But at the end of the day, you don’t need strikers to be playing particularly well, you just need them to score the goals.”
Staines are the visitors to Gander Green Lane on Saturday and Doswell says he has done his homework, having watched them in midweek.
He said: “They are very good going forward, they get the ball forward quickly, they have pace in the front four – so they are a real threat.
“I am hoping it will be an open game because, being at home, we want a result as well. I think it will be a good game for the fans.
“If we win, that will be 11 points from five games. We’d set the lads a target of 10 points from five games, we’re on the right path.”
Goalkeeper Kevin Scrivens remains on the sidelines for another week, while Kezie Ibe will also miss out. However, Craig Dundas should have recovered from a knock on his foot.
Following the FA Cup defeat to Bromley, Doswell has released Nick McCoy, Michael Abnett and Reece Jones.
