Celebrating our second goal against Cardiff the other weekend, I obtained a pretty nasty gash on my shin in the Lower Holmesdale.

Maybe I was being more cautious because our seats were higher and steeper than most cliff faces – but at Stamford Bridge I thankfully did not suffer a repeat injury.

Nevertheless, we must have celebrated for at least five minutes solid after Chamakh scored on Saturday.

It was the sort of goal Glenn Murray finished for fun last season and more reminiscent of the Chamakh of Bordeaux YouTube highlights compilations, than the Chamakh of boring Twitter jokes.

I don't want to get carried away, but when the chances fall for him it's hard to argue he does not look more clinical and deadly than the costly Spanish striker who scored against us in blue.

From our lofty position in the Shed End, I couldn't work out whether it was the Moroccan that had netted or Cameron Jerome, and anyone I asked during the pandemonium just shrugged and carried on.

It was a brilliant moment, and made the final result less galling. In fact the whole carefree, nothing to lose attitude of the game and boisterous demeanour of our fans meant the score was almost immaterial. But retaining our dignity was certainly a bonus.

Always a strange thing to say after a defeat, but on Saturday I was particularly proud to be supporting the Eagles.

Never more so than hearing the chant: "We're Crystal Palace, we wave our own flags" – directed at the three or four paid Chelsea flag-wavers – which still puts a smile on my face thinking about it now.

Their flag-flappers are clearly orchestrated for the TV cameras as they only stood on the side of the ground being filmed.

A small manufactured detail like that makes you proud to have our loyal, DIY fans. And that spontaneous moment of witty crowd expression reminds you why you’d ever pay £55 to go to a match you're 99 per cent likely to lose.

To be honest, it's an overused chant tune now, but funny nonetheless. I still don't think it topped: "We're Crystal Palace, we clap with our hands" at the Brighton play-off semi-final while the home support used their plastic clappers/lyric sheets, but it was a nice ending to a really heartening performance.

It's amazing what a few results will do. After showings like this a few weeks ago it was hard to focus on the undeniable positives because we were on such a bad run.

Now, having managed to already top Derby's record low points tally (phew), and sitting within touching distance of other relegation candidates, an impressive defeat to title contenders can give us unadulterated hope rather than optimism-tinged gloom.

The result certainly does nothing but encourage the feeling that Newcastle at home on Saturday, indeed facing anyone at Selhurst, should be a really close encounter.

This is now becoming the season we hoped we'd have; close, nervy, dogged, and by no means a foregone conclusion.

I’d happily accept more painful leg injuries if they’re caused celebrating another Chamakh strike.
