Glorious day for Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers started their 60th season on Saturday by hosting a 15-a-side tournament at MacFarlane Lane, which included two teams each from Battersea Ironsides and Grasshoppers and then club sides from Windsor, Hampstead and Readingensians.
It was an excellent chance for Grasshoppers coaching team headed by Mike Reilly to see the fruits of their pre-season training with a squad of over 40 to select the two squads from giving an excellent blend of established and new players.
The four emerging semi-finalists were Grasshoppers 1st, Battersea 2nds, Hampstead and Windsor with Grasshoppers and Windsor eventually winning through to the final with Windsor running out eventual winners 7-13 after taking a 0-13 lead into the second half with a converted try and two penalties.
Gs came back at Windsor down the slope but could only manage one converted try despite being camped in the Windsor 22 for most of the second half.
Coach Mike Reilly said: “I’m pleased with the overall performances of both sides today with lots of positives to come out and plenty of things to work on ahead of our first league game on 12th September.”
Director of rugby, Matt Gilmore added: “Training and recruitment have gone well and there’s a tremendous atmosphere at the Club with players old and new blending well both on and off the pitch.
"I’m therefore very confident that Grasshoppers will be strong at the start of our 60th season.”
Recruitment though is still a major factor for Grasshoppers so anyone who’d like to get involved should contact Matt Gilmore on: 07917 507939 or log onto www.grasshoppersrfc.com Alternatively, just come along to training at 7.30 on Tuesday or Thursday.
