Croydon Harriers Peter Chambers admitted to be shocked he was selected for the GB & NI squad for the 2014 European Cross-County Championships.
It is the first time 19-year-old Chambers has been selected, and he heads to Bulgaria in two weeks time on the back of a second place finish in last weekend’s trials in Liverpool.
The UCL student was first Brit home in the U20 men’s trial, second to Eritrea’s Abel Tsegay.
In arguably the race of his life, the 19-year-old completed the 6.7km course in 20 minutes 35 seconds.
He said: “It is a bit of a shock really – I came into the race with an outside chance, but I didn’t really know how it would go.
“I thought I may have gone out too quickly, but I paced it well and enjoyed the last 500m of the race.
“I knew on the first lap it would be bunched and I had to be patient and wait.
“I knew someone would go off hard but that gives you someone to chase and that helped me out.”
