Croydon Harriers closed in four teams at the hotly contested Surrey Road Relays at Wimbledon Park on Saturday.

Twenty Harriers were in action at the event that attracted nearly 450 athletes from across the county.

The men’s team finished eighth position in the 26-team field.

Ben Savill continued his improvement with the eighth best individual time on the day with a 14 minute 41 second 4.6km leg.

Alex Penfold (15:57, 61st), Simon Loughran (16:19, 84th), David Brown (16:15, 79th), Rob Spalding (17:11, 126th) and Jake English (15:32, 38th) completed the team.

The M40 team went two minutes faster overall than their best in previous years, but missed on bronze by just over 50 seconds.

Alan Burn ran the fourth fastest M50 time of the day in 16:26, before Mark Maginn (17:32, 12th M40), Neil Aikman (17:45, 15th M40) and Colin Oxlade (18:10, 14th M50) brought the squad home.

The women’s team improved two places and seven minutes on last year’s performance with Ethiopian born Saron Hailseselase recording the third fastest individual time of the day in 16:30.

Eryn Lovell (19:26, 37th), Stevie Lawrence (19:07, 27th) and Jules Williams (23:53, 84th) completed the quartet.

The B team of Kartik Iyer (17:13, 131st), Dan Barnes (17:12, 129th), James Moore (19:10, 235th), Matthew Kiernan (18:19, 183rd), Oliver Hosken (269th, 19:46) and Andy Del Nevo (298th, 20:16) were 22nd.

Jake English finished runner-up on his half marathon debut at Beckenham in one hour 18:10.

In parkrun action, 13 Harriers tackled Lloyd Park and there was a one, two, three in the women’s category thanks to Jessica Moore (22:13), Anna Corby (24:58) and Saarah Nawaz (25:17).

This weekend sees the Harriers take on the Will Bolton Memorial cross-country relays at Sparrows Den and the Surrey combined events championships at Sutton Arena.
