Wallington’s record-breaker David Weir completed a unique Vitality Westminster Mile and London 10,000 double over the bank holiday weekend.

The 36-year-old, known as the Weirwolf, continued to add a couple of more milestones to his impressive ever growing CV when he became the first wheelchair athlete to complete a mile in under three minutes around the St James’s Park course.

He bounced back from last month’s London marathon disappointment to cross the finish line in front of Buckingham Palace in two minutes 57 seconds, destroying his previous world best - set at last year’s race - by six seconds.

His nearest challenger from South Africa, Ernst van Dyk, was left trailing the moment the popular south Londoner pulled away during the first half of the race around Birdcage Walk, and eventually finished in 3:09, with Rafa Botello Jimenez third in 3:25.

“I’ve always said I could do it,” said Weir who won his fourth straight Vitality Westminster Mile title.

“I knew it was possible and training has gone really well. The team behind me have been telling me to get it right. I knew I had to get off to a quick start and that Ernst would chase hard. I knew from last year that my start let me down.

“I was more relaxed down Birdcage Walk, but I was still pushing at 22 miles an hour and that’s not bad."

He added: “I was disappointed with London so that gave me a bit more to think about. I wanted to prove a point that I was still up there with the best in the world.”

Then, 24 hours later, Weir added the 10k title in 21:06, again ahead of van Dyk (21:39) and Jimenez (24:51).

Weir rounded up his excellent bank holiday weekend by adding: “It’s always good to get a double. I’d like to have broken 20 minutes today but it was quite windy out there and there are a lot of corners on this course.

“But there were no after effects from the mile and this race capped a really good weekend for me. Now we just need to get some more of the top guys down here and make it a more competitive race.”
