A number of young Croydon Harriers enjoyed a fruitful England Athletics U15 and U17 Championships at Bedford over the weekend, with medallists and several finalists.
Top spots went to short hurdles silver medallists Shirin Irving and Joe Yarde.
Irving’s 11.15 second run in the U15 75m event took her within a whisker of the club record which has stood for 30 years at 11.1.
Yarde was also close to the long standing club record of 13.1 seconds (set in 1990) in the U17 hurdles as he missed gold, sharing a 13.18 second clocking with the champion.
U17 long jumper Elliot Safo made an encouraging return after injury to take long jump bronze with 6.82m.
U15 middle distance prospect Patrick Lucas finished a worthy fourth in the 800m, clocking two minutes 5.4 seconds, while U17 Omari Carr-Miller maintained his run of good form with a 49.79s 400m run for fifth.
Sixth places went to in form U17 sprinter Cameron Smith (11.04s in the 100m) and to Kertis Beswick in the U15 80m hurdles, which he ran in 12.01s with the winner.
U17 steeplechaser Mark Plackett improved to 4:45.55 in the 1500m steeplechase for a well earned seventh and triple jumper Sheldon Brown cleared 13.30m to place 10th.
Elsewhere, veteran Ian Wright threw off injury problems with a vengeance to win the Slough Black Park 5k in 18 minutes 21 seconds.
Entries are now being taken on line for the Lexus Croydon 10K which will take place on 10/10/2010, start at 10.10am.
