A contingent of Hercules Wimbledon athletes are to train alongside some of Cuba’s London Olympic hopefuls during 10 days of warm weather training in the Caribbean.
The 15-strong group is flying out to Cuba’s capital, Havana, on Sunday in the club’s latest international venture organised by club official Maurice Sharp.
It will end a busy weekend for the group, many of which will be competing in the English National cross country championships at Parliament Hill Fields on Saturday.
“We will be staying at the famous Colegio Deportiva Giraldo Cordoba Cardin,” said Sharp.
“The college is the base for most of Cuba’s Olympic hopefuls including those from their most successful two sports, boxing and athletics.
“We will be training with some of them on the track as well as conducting our own training sessions.”
Heading the endurance squad will be Surrey junior men’s 1500m champion Liam White while 15-year-old Ricards Lodge School pupil Imani Kay-Francis is the youngest athlete going.
The Surrey schools intermediate girls shot putt champion will be training with Cuba’s throwers who are strong medal contenders for London.
