Croydon Harrier Ben Savill took the honours in the Croydon Elite Mile in aid of Sport Relief at Croydon Arena on Sunday, writes Matthew Kiernan.

The 17 year-old clocked four minutes 58 seconds, prevailing by a single second from club-mates Kartik Iyer and Simon Loughran.

The other leading age group winners from Croydon came from Omar Harhara (U15 boys', 5:14), Stevie Lawrence (U17 women, 5:22), Josie Kavanagh (U15 girls', 5:50) and Ellie McCormack (U13 girls', 6:00). The race, which was contested by Croydon Harriers and Striders of Croydon, acted as a precursor to the main event fun run, which attracted over 300 entrants.

In parkrun action, Holly Haile broke the U20 women’s course record at Lloyd Park, winning the women’s race in 19:14. It is her seventh victory at the event.

Stevie Lawrence made it a Croydon one-two and 14 year-old Rob Spalding (19:45) was runner-up in the men’s race.

Charlie Brackenborough brought his cross-country season to a close at Bexhill Down at the South East schools championships.

Representing Surrey, the 13-year-old finished 13th in the 60-strong field.

At the British Masters cross-country championships in Bath, Colin Oxlade flew the Croydon flag.

The 52 year-old clocked 31.15 over the undulating five-mile course, finishing 58th out of the 155 finishers.

In indoors action, Maksims Karacuns leapt to new lifetime best in the pole vault, clearing 3.64m to top the U17 men’s category at the Vault London open at Sutton Arena.

Training partner Andy Del Nevo also cleared a lifetime best of 3.04m in the same competition.
