John Fisher School old boy Martyn Rooney boosted his chances of competing in this summer's Beijing Olympics when he stunned the crowds at the Loughborough International meet on Sunday by winning the 400m final.

His time of 45:46 seconds was inside the Olympic qualifying mark for the event.

A delighted Rooney said: "Loughborough is not the quickest track and it was windy out there today, so it bodes well for this year and I'm very excited. My aim is to make the Olympic final."

A week after achieving the 100m Olympic qualifying mark with a 10:18 clocking in Italy, Sutton's Harry Aikines-Aryeetey won the 100m on Sunday in 10:48. He is a strong contender for a place in Britain's team to compete in the European Cup in Annecy, France, next month.

St Mary's Twickenham's Jo Ankier was the match winner of the women's 3,000m steeple-chase event in 10:21:09. Teddington-based Faye Fullerton was third in the 1,500m in 4:10:45.

Former St Mary's student Andy Frost won the men's hammer with 66.15m, with current St Mary's ace Amir Williamson third with 63.06m.

Howard of Effingham schoolgirl Emelia Gorecka was the runner-up in the invitation women's 1,500m in 4:26.87. Sutton's Jade Ive, competing for the GB Junior team, was second in the women's pole vault with 3.85m.

St Mary's British Universities champion Jade Nicholls was sixth in the women's discus with 45.20m.

Herne Hill's Jade Dodd, competing for GB Juniors, was fifth in the women's javelin with 45.02m.
