Twickenham may be the borough’s top ranked cricket side, but skipper Carlos Nunes has revealed it may never have happened but for the assistance of rivals Teddington.

Nunes’ Ts finished fourth in the Middlesex County League Premier Division table after a convincing 170-run win over Finchley on the Green at the weekend – their eighth victory of the campaign.

It brought the curtain down on the most successful campaign in the club’s 180-year history, which saw them finish above the area’s traditional cricketing giants Richmond and Teddington.

The result came on the back of opener Babar Choudary’s 102 and Nunes’ 65, one of several critical knocks from the captain that has seen him pile up 593 league runs this season – including two centuries.

The South African all-rounder, below, had barely scored a run until his unbeaten 120 against Ealing in June, but in his last 10 innings – including that effort – he has notched 530 runs at an average of 75.

It is a run of form that has helped Twickenham collect 74 of their 88 league points and Nunes admitted some advice from Teddington’s director of youth cricket Josh Knappett had worked wonders.

“In the first six games I think I had 65 runs. I went to see Josh for a session and he completely changed my game,” he said.

“It was important. You realise you need that extra help. It is a tough league, bowlers can work you out quickly and it can eat you up.

“The second half of the season has been amazing and is probably the best cricket I’ve ever played. The innings against Ealing is my favourite ever and one I will never forget.”

Choudhary, Nunes and JP Cronje (44) – who called time on his 14-year stay at the Green on Saturday – helped Twickenham to 329 all out, before player of the year Fawad Mullahazadah (4-30) took his season’s wickets tally to 33 to help dismiss the visitors for 159.

It meant Twickenham finished fourth, Richmond fifth and Teddington sixth, with the Ts 42 points off the top.

Nunes was confident of a title challenge next term, and added: “Guys have done well in the circumstances, but we need to find another top order bat, get fit over the winter and then we will be challenging.”
