Neil Baker and his Spencer CC team-mates have vowed to put things right next season after relegation from the Premier Division of the Surrey Championship.

And Baker wants to lead the resurrection in what would be his 10th season as skipper.

Spencer’s fate was sealed on Saturday despite a 36-run win over Weybridge, featuring Baker’s 56 and 5-58 for George Edwards.

They also needed Valley End to slip up at home to Banstead, but a four-wicket win put the final nail in Spencer’s coffin.

Baker said: “It was pleasing to finish on a high, and to prove to ourselves we can win at this level.

“But we knew at the back of our minds that Valley End would beat Banstead, and so we were prepared.”

He added: “But as soon as we were back in the clubhouse, the lads were talking about next season and putting things right.

“There doesn’t seem to be anyone else who wants to be skipper, so I am happy to keep going. Besides, I’d like to end on a winning note rather than relegation.”

Spencer’s second season in the top flight had started well with five wins out of six games up to the end of June.

However, from then on, Spencer could muster just one win in 10.

Baker said: “Our fate was sealed when we lost to Valley End two weeks ago.

“We’ve lacked strength in depth in our bowling attack, and have not been able to put teams under enough pressure when we’ve been on top.

“That said, we’ve not batted well enough either, so the two sides of the coin are not that pretty.”
