Like many pretentious writerly types, I have an affection for Vonnegut.

I have yet to come across a turn of phrase that so elegantly conveys so much in three words as “So it goes.”

It speaks to both the pain in life and the need to get on with things despite the pain.

Wimbledon’s all-important cup tie against Liverpool on Monday night was inarguably one of the biggest nights of the reformed club’s 12-year history.

Obviously nothing can top the penalty shoot-out win over Luton to put us back in the Football League, and some fans will invariably shout for the win over the franchise this season to edge out Monday night.

But however it ranks for you, there is little doubt that our tie in the third round of the FA Cup was special.

Your Local Guardian:

We are AFC Wimbledon, we are the resurrection

Everything that makes Wimbledon special - the fans, our history, the culture that permeates the club - was on full display for millions across Britain and around the world.

Which made the news that followed the next morning all the more bitter.

It emerged that Matt Tubbs was being recalled from his loan by Bournemouth, only to be released and then join Portsmouth because he wants to win promotion.

Just like that, our leading goalscorer is gone.

Last season, our top goalscorer (who also left midway through the campaign) tallied nine goals before shoving off.

Tubbs had 12 in the league, 15 in all competitions, and was the big reason we’ve had the success we’ve had so far. And now he’s gone.

The window’s open, and thanks to the Cup we’ve got a little bit of money to bring someone in.

But the loan market is inherently volatile (as we just witnessed), and it’s unclear whether we can bring someone in permanently to push us up the table.
