George Burley reckons bringing Edgar Davids to Crystal Palace is good for football.
Transfer activity has been frantic at Selhurst Park since Burley arrived a the club but it is the capture of the former Holland international that has done most to capture the imagination.
Burley said: “It is great for the fans and the club that Edgar has come out of retirement to come and play for us.
“He has been a terrific professional all his career, and on Tuesday he did very well.
“Once he got to understand my Scottish accent we got on fine!.
“I think that it is important that he enjoys his football.
“We want to play the way Edgar has played all his life, with the ball on the ground and his experience is obviously vital.
“We have got good young players coming through and of course he can help them.
“When I was a young player at Ipswich I always looked up to the older ones.
“Having leaders and professionals around to look up to, like Edgar, can only help their development not just off the pitch but actually when they are playing in a game.”
Burley also dismissed concerns about Davids' fitness after the veteran played almost 90 minutes for the Eagles on his debut at Portsmouth in the Carling Cup.
He said: “I suppose only time will tell but he played around 85 minutes at Portsmouth without any problems and he has trained today and looked sharp and bright.
“I think he is very much looking forward to Saturday now against Scunthorpe.”
