Alan Pardew reckons this weekend’s trip to Burnley will tell him more about his new squad than the win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Last weekend’s 2-1 triumph lifted the Eagles out of the Premier League drop zone, and level on points with Saturday’s opponents.

It came amid a fever-pitch atmosphere at Selhurst Park and the fresh excitement of a new manager - and Pardew knows this weekend paints a very different picture.

He said: “We played really well against Spurs, we defended well, we produced chances and that’s what you have got to do against a top 10 team.

“But this is a different assignment on Saturday, Burnley are not Spurs.

“They play different, they have a different agenda, and you need to have a team who can cope with that.

“It’s a different test and I will find out more about what we have in the squad after the game.”

Burnley go into the game on the back of League draws with Manchester City and Newcastle United, and a 2-1 win over QPR at Turf Moor.

However, they were dumped out of the FA Cup 4-2 by Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday at White Hart Lane.

Pardew said: "Sean [Dyche] has instilled in Burnley a great attitude, work-rate and commitment and no shortage of skill either – a couple of their players are top class, that’s how you get out of the Championship.

“He has built on that and they have been fabulous in terms of the resources they have to work with.

“But we have to put all that admiration to one side on Saturday and make sure we beat them.”

Pardew took Newcastle United to Turf Moor in December, on the day Dyche celebrated his 100th game in charge, and left with a 1-1 draw.

He said: “I am probably armed like no other Premier League manager in that I have already been there this season.

“We struggled with Newcastle in the first half, we did better in the second, and quite rightly it was shared in terms of points.

“I can arm the team with what to expect, it is tough, and it is a different game to Spurs.”
