Christian Benteke insists Crystal Palace must get used to ‘total football’ under Dutch manager Frank de Boer.

The towering striker flourished under Sam Allardyce in the second half of last season, but cut an isolated figure in Palace’s 3-0 home defeat to Huddersfield on Saturday.

De Boer with three at the back, with Wilfried Zaha and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in more central attacking positions, but Benteke has no time for excuses.

“It’s a new formation but I think it was an excuse because we played a few games with that formation,” Benteke said after the opening day loss.

“We have to get used to it as soon as possible because the Premier League has already started.

“Next week it’s going to be another tough game against Liverpool away, it’s not an excuse, we have to deal with it.”

Benteke sees no reason to dwell on previous manager Allardyce’s more direct approach, which saw him finish last season with 17 goals.

De Boer, whose career has been shaped by his time at Ajax and Barcelona, will nto change his style of play, according to Benteke, who believes his team-mates must adapt quickly.

“It’s his DNA, the Dutch want to build from the back,” Benteke added. “We know what to do and we have to do what the manager wants.

“Obviously now I would say Ruben and Wilf will play differently because they will be more in the middle than the wide areas.

“We played a few games in the pre-season so it’s not like he just came today with a new formation. We train, we play like that, so we have to get used to it.”

Former Liverpool striker Benteke will face his old club in Palace's next league game on Saturday, but the Belgium international will treat the game like any other.

He added: "I want to play good for the team, I want to score, no matter whether it's against Liverpool or any other team."
