Sam Allardyce has questioned Crystal Palace target Mamadou Sakho’s omission from the Liverpool squad.

Ex-Palace boss Allardyce signed Sakho on a six-month loan deal in January, and the France defender starred in his eight games for the club.

The Eagles, now under the stewardship of Frank de Boer, expressed an interest to permanently sign Sakho earlier this summer, but were put off by Liverpool’s £30m asking price.

The former Paris Saint-Germain defender has not played for the Reds in over a year after falling out with Jurgen Klopp.

And Liverpool’s defensive frailties have been exposed at the start of the new season, keeping just one clean sheet in four games.

When talking about Sakho’s omission, Allardyce said: “So they are not going to give Mama Sakho a chance to resurrect his career at Liverpool?

“He was fabulous for me. He was outstanding. One of the reasons we stayed up at Palace was Mama’s defensive qualities.

“In the time he spent with us he turned around what was a very leaky defence.

“When he arrived with us, he had been with the [Liverpool] under-23s the entire season and, with great credit to him, he came straight into the side performing at the highest level. He was very good.”
