Crystal Palace must be patient with Frank de Boer, according to fellow Dutchman and Reading boss Jaap Stam.

Stam worked under De Boer, who has lost his first three league games with the Eagles, as an assistant coach at Ajax.

After a penalty shoot-out in the Championship play-off final cost Reading a return to the Premier League last season, the former Manchester United defender knows all too well about the demands within the English game.

Stam said: “The club made a decision to get Frank as manager because of his way of working and how he wanted to play, but as a manager to go to England to work and get success straight away is not easy, I know that.

“Sometimes, though, as a manager you need to have time as well to build something, to create a certain atmosphere within the group and a certain belief to do well and get results.

“The only thing is - are we patient enough? Do you get the time? And that is not always the case.”

Palace chairman Steve Parish has backed his under-fire manager publicly, however, ex-England boss Roy Hodgson, who grew up in Croydon, could be under consideration if De Boer fails to win at Burnley on Sunday.
