Adrian Mariappa felt it just wasn’t Crystal Palace’s day as they suffered their first Premier League defeat under Neil Warnock at Hull on Saturday.

Palace had won their previous two matches against Everton and Leicester but were undone by second half goals from Mohamed Diame and Nikica Jelavic at the KC Stadium to leave them 14th in the table going into the international break.

Mariappa came off the bench after just 12 minutes to replace the injured Scott Dann but admitted afterwards his side had not been their usual selves on Humberside.

He explained: “Things just didn’t go our way, it happens.

“We had a lot of decisions which went against us and we’re disappointed to lose the game.

“It’s hard to put a finger on what went wrong. We’ll look back at the video and see where we can improve and what went wrong.

“We’ll look to rectify it but everyone needs to remember the lads have done terrifically in the last few games, and our wingers have been ripping full-backs apart.

“In the second half we just didn’t quite click this time.”

Saturday’s early appearance from the bench was Mariappa’s first Premier League involvement since starting in the 0-0 draw with Burnley on September 13.

He only came on because of Dann’s misfortune, but the 28-year-old was raring to go when called upon by Neil Warnock.

“As a sub you’ve got to be ready and warm up well,” said Mariappa.

“If you’re needed then you need to go on and I just went straight into it.

“Hopefully it’s not too serious with Scott Dann.

“He’s been a massive part of what we’ve achieved at this club in the last year.

“Hopefully it’s not too bad for him and he’s back playing sooner than later.

“I haven’t played too much this season yet but I thought in the first half we linked up well down the right, like we did in the latter part of last season.

“That was pleasing and a bit better quality on the crossing and it may have come to something.

“That’s positive from my part of view going forward.”

Dann was replaced in the centre of defence by Martin Kelly, with Mariappa filling the right-back role in the enforced back four shake up.

He said: “Whenever I play, wherever I play, I’ll always give everything.

“Martin Kelly is like most full-backs out there like myself and Joel Ward – we all started out at centre-halves.

“I thought Martin did well when he went in there.

“Wherever we play, if we’re not playing, all the lads are pulling in the same direction.

“But when you do play you want to take your chance.”
