Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has played down Sam Allardyce’s heroics at Crystal Palace.

The Eagles’ 4-0 win over Hull secured their Premier League status on Sunday, and kept Allardyce’s managerial record of never being relegated intact.

Palace were in the relegation zone in February, but shock wins against Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool proved pivotal.

Allardyce, who has pulled off other rescue missions with Sunderland, Bolton and Blackburn, said: “I think because of the run-in and the size of the teams we have had to play, this [Crystal Palace] was the hardest [team to keep up].

“We did not waste the magnificent results we achieved, particularly in that short spell where we did well against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. It is a massive relief that’s for sure.”

But former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp reckons Allardyce was fortunate to have big names such as Christian Benteke, Yohan Cabaye and Wilfried Zaha in his team.

Redknapp added: “Sam Allardyce has done a good job but I would say it’s probably the easiest job he’s ever had.

“When you look at the quality of players Palace have compared to Hull’s - there’s a vast difference.

“Christian Benteke, Yohan Cabaye, Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend are really good quality so they shouldn’t really be in this position.

“That’s got to be their aim next year, not to be fighting relegation with two or three games to go, they’ve got too many good players for that.”
