A DAY nursery in Harlow has become the first in Essex to accquire Neighbourhood Nursery status.

The Nursery Slope, in Hammarskjold Road behind Harlow Sportcentre, will now be working in partnership with Essex County Council to provide childcare to parents wishing to return to work or embark on a training programme.

The neighbourhood nursery scheme means families living in deprived wards in Harlow, such as Netteswell and Hare Street, will be able to access high quality childcare at a reduced rate.

The funding has also meant it has been able to open a baby unit as well as expand and refurbish the existing play areas.

Co-director John Harrison said: "The neighbourhood nursery scheme now enables us to provide more places for children whose parents may not otherwise be able to afford nursery care.

"So far we've had a very positive reaction from parents and hope more families in the less privileged wards in Harlow will be able to benefit. We're expecting it to be very popular."
