Councillor Peter Brooks says 15,000 more homes are planned for the borough (Letters, June 4). So can we expect the same thorough planning for the future as we have had in the past?

I will mention the building of the Abbey Wood estate, move on to the building of Thamesmead, take up the expansion of this to cover most of the marshes, add to this the Brook, the Dockyard and various other housing schemes.

Plus I think we must have at least doubled the local population.

And for this we have: * Transport: numerous road restrictions, three lanes reduced to one on major roads and various other so-called calming measures. The loss of trams and trolley buses, and what remains is usually filthy and covered in graffiti.

* Police: five full-time police stations now reduced to two.

* Health: Six hospitals, reduced to a second-hand prefab building, which I am told is only leased.

* Leisure and education: I have seen two swimming pools and at least three schools close.

We are now threatened with a new river crossing to help increase our congestion. So it would appear sustainability in the planning is based on reducing everything for an expanding population.
