Tottenham MP David Lammy has split from his glamorous TV presenter girlfriend, June Sarpong, after dating for two years.

The high-profile couple, who fell for each other at a House of Commons tea party in 2001, have told friends they are so over-worked they have no time to see each other.

News of the break-up comes as barrister-trained Lammy, 30, enters a challenging phase in his career. Last week's Government reshuffle moved him from his post as a junior health minister into the Department for Constitutional Affairs.

He will now work alongside the Lord Chancellor to set up a new Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, presenter Sarpong, 25, has been working on three television series for Channel 4 – T4, Your Face Or Mine and Dirty Laundry.

A spokesman for Mr Lammy said: "Both of them are so busy they don't have time to see each other. They are still friends and I am sure they will remain close friends."

Harvard-educated Lammy, is the youngest and hippest MP in the Commons. He once persuaded singer Alicia Keys to perform a pop concert in the House of Commons.

The couple were equally at home attending both political functions and glittering showbiz events.

The Tottenham-born politician, who was one of five children raised by a single mother, was elected as Labour MP for Tottenham at the age of 27, following the death of long-standing MP Bernie Grant.
