A love-struck Crystal Palace fan has tracked down the mystery woman he met on a train after a plea he posted on Twitter went viral.

Angus Mainland, 19, from Balham, had launched an appeal to find the brunette he sat next to on the 12.45pm service from Bournemouth to watch Crystal Palace beat Southampton 3-2 on Saturday.

Last night, he informed his followers that he had in fact managed to find the girl after a tweet to Cross Country Trains received more than 4,600 retweets and 2,900 favourites.

The Bournemouth University student posted: “Thank you to everyone who retweeted! You can call off the search, I’ve found her and am talking to her! She’s taken it very well!”

The news was met with messages of congratulations including one from Cross Country Trains, who tweeted: “Feel free to drop us a Direct Message, it's only right to let us know how things go! Glad something came from it! – Andy.”

Mr Mainland, who loaned the girl his scarf before snapping a selfie with her on the journey, had not realised he wanted to ask her out until he had left the train to watch the football match.

He sent a tweet to Cross Country Trains in a bid to find her with the message: “Please help me find the girl I sat next to on the 12:45 from Bournemouth to Southampton. Fell in love.”
