Teddington-based Commonwealth 5,000m silver medallist Jo Pavey finished runner-up to Kenya's Doris Changeywo in trhe Great Ireland 10km road race in Dublin.

Pavey was more than happy with her time of 32 minutes 22 seconds, finishing just seven seconds behind the Kenyan in wintry conditions.

Pavey and 23-three-year-old Changeywo, fourth in the recent World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh, broke away from the field after the halfway stage.

"Doris was obviously in good shape given her position at the worlds and it showed when she just pulled away from me on the steepest part of the course," said Pavey.

"I have never been a great hill runner, but once we got back on to the flat, I felt I was making ground upon her.

"I was concentrating on catching her, but really given her strength, there was no way it was going to happen.

"But it is nice to be back racing at this level and the result shows I am travelling in the right direction going into the summer season."

Pavey is now for a month's preparation stint in the high altitude of Dullstroom with husband and coach Gavin.

Another Teddington-based British international Kate Reed was fourth (32:50).

Meanwhile, Hampton-based Australian Benita Johnson faded to seventh, a place ahead of her compatriot Victoria Mitchell, who won last year's race.

East Molesey-based Sonia O'Sullivan, the Irish Olympic runner, had to settle for 11th place in 35:53 in her final road race on Irish soil.

The Irish great finished almost four minutes behind the winner.

Kenyan Abraham Chebii clocked 28.47 to win the men's event, which left him 23 seconds ahead of yet another Teddington-based runner, Craig Mottram.

The Aussie had been aiming for a fifth successive win in the race.
